DIY Guide: Cutting, Overlapping, and Installing Metal Roofing in the Philippines

Metal roofing is one of the most durable and cost-effective roofing options, commonly used in many Philippine households. If you're planning to work in the construction industry or start your own roofing business, learning how to install metal roofing is essential. To help you get started, we’ll walk you through how to cut, overlap, and finish installing a metal roof.

Types of Metal Roofing

Knowing the metal roofing types you will use for installing your metal roofing is important. Here are 4 of the more common types available in the Philippines:

1.     Corrugated Sheets: Wavy, lightweight panels that are ideal for residential structures. A cost-effective material that is easy to install

2.     Ribbed/Trapezoidal Sheets: Shaped ideally for water drainage with its deeper ridges. Generally used for commercial buildings.

3.     Standing Seam: Recognized by its namesake. A bit more premium, it checks both form and function with its sleek look and water-resistant feature.

4.     Metal Tiles: Designed to mimic the look of clay tile roofing. Perfect for the modern home

Each type varies in its price, installation complexity, and durability. Choose the type you want based on your project’s requirements and that’s within your budget.

How to Cut Metal Roofing

Important Reminder: Always use protective headwear, cut-resistant gloves, and ear protectors when handling any cutting tool. Cut in a well-ventilated area and clean up metal shavings to avoid rusting.

Tools you’ll need: Circular saw with metal-cutting blade, Tin snips/Aviation snips, Tape Measure, chalk/marker, clamp, grinder, file, sandpaper, PPEs.

Precision is key to cutting your metal roofing to ensure clean edges and a proper fit. Here’s how:

1.  The right tools: Use a circular saw with a metal cutting blade. Switch to tin snips for smaller cuts and a nibbler for curves.

2.  Measure twice: Mark the cutting line with a straight edge and a marker, making sure to double-check your measurements to avoid wasting materials.

3.  Secure the sheet: Place the roofing on a stable surface and clamp it to prevent movement.

4.  Cut carefully: When using the circular saw, set the blade depth to just a little deeper than the sheet thickness. Slowly cut across the marked line. When using the tin snips or nibbler, cut in a small, controlled motion.

5.  Deburr and round the edges: Use a file and sandpaper to deburr and round the edges of your roofing. This is done to ensure a perfect fit and avoid injury.

How to Overlap Metal Roofing

Proper overlapping enhances durability and prevents leaks, which is especially important in the Philippines’ rainy climate.

Tools you’ll need: Measuring tape, Chalk line or marker, Metal roofing panels, Roofing square (optional, for alignment), Clamps (to hold panels in place), Cordless drill or driver, Self-tapping screws with rubber washers (Tek screws), PPEs

Follow these steps:

1.  Plan the layout: Start with the bottom edge of the roof, working your way upwards. Ensure that the sheets are aligned with the roof’s slope.

2.  Overlap guidelines: Overlap sheets by at least one corrugation (for corrugated sheets) or one rib (for ribbed sheets) horizontally. Vertically, overlap by 6–8 inches (about 15-20cm) for slopes above 15 degrees, or 10–12 inches (25-30cm) for gentler slopes.

3.  Seal the overlap: Apply butyl tape or silicone sealant to prevent water seepage

4.  Securing: Use self-tapping screws with rubber washers (Tek screws), placing them at the peaks of the corrugation or rib to prevent leakage. Ensure there are no gaps before fastening.

How to Install Metal Roofing

Now that you know how to cut and overlap metal roofing, here’s an overview of how to install it:

Tools you’ll need: Same as the guide above. Measuring tape, Chalk line or marker, Metal roofing panels, Roofing square (optional, for alignment), Clamps (to hold panels in place), Cordless drill or driver, Self-tapping screws with rubber washers (Tek screws), PPEs

1.  Prepare the Roof: Ensure the roof is structurally sound, with purlins spaced 24-36 inches (61-91 cm) apart. Install underlayment or insulation if needed.

2.  Safety First: Use a harness, non-slip shoes, and scaffolding. Work on a dry, calm day to avoid accidents.

3.  First steps: Start at the lower edge of the roof, aligning the sheet with the eave. Secure with screws along the purlins every 12-8 inches.

4.  Subsequent Sheets: Overlap as described above, checking the alignment with a level. Fasten each sheet with a Tek screw and driver as you go.

5.  Add Flashings and Trims: Add ridge caps, edge trims, and valley flashings, sealing with sealant for weather proofing.

6.  Final Inspection: Check for loose screws, gaps, or damage. Clean the roof to remove debris.

Final Tip

Patience and preparation are extremely important when installing metal roofing. Take your time marking and cutting to ensure your roofing fits properly, or you might waste materials and have to redo the project. If you’re still a beginner, practice with scrap metal first before working on an actual roofing project.
