DIY Guide: How to Replace a Doorknob or Lockset

For many homeowners and DIY enthusiasts in Northern Mindanao, keeping your home secure is always a priority. Whether you’re upgrading old hardware, replacing a damaged doorknob, or simply updating the look of your doors, knowing how to replace a doorknob or lockset is a practical skill. The good news is that it’s one of the easier DIY projects you can take on.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Before you start, make sure you have everything ready:

  • A new doorknob or lockset (check if it fits the thickness of your door)

  • Screwdrivers (usually Phillips-head, sometimes flat-head depending on the new doorknob)

  • Tape measure (more precise than cloth measures)

  • Optional: chisel and hammer (if adjustments are needed for the latch or strike plate)

Mackun Hardware offers a wide range of doorknobs and locksets, from budget-friendly options to heavy-duty brands here.

Step 1: Remove the Old Doorknob

Start by loosening the screws on the interior side of your doorknob. Once the screws are out, pull the two knob halves apart. If there’s a faceplate, remove that too. With a little wiggling, the old knob should slide right out.

Step 2: Take Out the Latch and Strike Plate

Next, unscrew the latch mechanism from the edge of the door. This is the piece that extends into the doorframe when the door is closed. Also, remove the strike plate from the frame itself. If your new set comes with a different shape or size, you may need to adjust the cutout with a chisel to make it fit.

Step 3: Install the New Latch

Position the new latch in the slot on the edge of the door. Make sure the curved side of the latch faces the direction the door closes. This helps it catch smoothly. Once it’s aligned, screw it securely in place.

Step 4: Attach the New Doorknob or Lockset

Insert the exterior knob or handle first, guiding its spindle through the latch opening. Then attach the interior knob, making sure the parts fit snugly together. Secure both sides with screws, tightening them until the knob feels firm but not overly stiff.

If you’re installing a keyed lockset, ensure the keyhole faces outward and lines up properly with the latch.

Step 5: Test the Lock and Adjust if Necessary

Close the door and test the new hardware. Turn the knob, use the key, and check that the latch slides smoothly into the strike plate. If the door doesn’t close properly, you may need to realign the strike plate on the frame.

Minor adjustments can usually be handled with a screwdriver, but sometimes you’ll need to reposition the plate slightly by loosening the screws, shifting it a few millimeters, and tightening it back in place.

Safety and Maintenance Tips

  • Always wear safety gloves when handling metal parts.

  • If your new lockset feels stiff, apply a small amount of lubricant to keep it working smoothly.

  • For long-lasting durability in CDO’s humid and rainy climate, choose rust-resistant hardware.

  • Keep a spare set of keys in a safe place.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re a professional tradesman or a weekend DIYer in Cagayan de Oro, having this skill saves you the time and expense of hiring someone for a job you can easily do yourself. With the right tools, a reliable lockset, and a bit of patience, you can finish the project in under an hour.
