The Ultimate Drill Bit Guide: Choose the Right Bit for Wood, Metal & Concrete in the Philippines

Drilling is a common step when doing DIY projects and construction in the Philippines. But with so many varieties available in the market, it can be difficult for beginners to know what they should purchase. In this guide, we’ll teach you about drill bits, their different sizes, various types, and unique applications for the Philippine market.

What is a Drill Bit?

A drill bit is a cutting tool used as an accessory for drills to create holes in various materials such as wood, metal, or concrete. Made from high-speed steel (HSS), carbide, or cobalt, drill bits vary in shape and size depending on the task. Construction in the Philippines involves a diverse array of materials, so choose the right drill bit to ensure precision, safety, and prevent tool damage.

Drill Bit Sizes

Drill bits are measured by diameter, either in millimeters (mm) or fractions of an inch. Here are some common sizes available for the Philippines construction or DIY market:

What Drill Bit to Use for Concrete?

Masonry drill bits with carbide tips (for durability) are commonly used when the task involves concrete. The bits have a wide, arrow-shaped tip, perfect for grinding through the tough concrete.

Professional Tips:

·       It is advised to use a hammer drill or rotary hammer for efficiency. Using an ordinary drill, especially for larger masonry drill bits, may damage your power tool.

·       For anchors or rebar holes, use 6-8 mm bits. For larger rebar (e.g., 10 mm or 12 mm), you’ll need larger drill bits (usually 10–14 mm).

·       The Philippines has a tropical climate. Humidity is generally high, so use rust-resistant coated bits to prolong usage. This is especially important for larger and more expensive drill bits.

·       Drill at low speed and clear dust to prevent clogging the hole.

·       Using a metal or wood drill bit for drilling concrete may cause clogging and damage your power tool.

What Drill Bit for Metal?

HSS or cobalt bits are best when it comes to drilling metal. They have sharp, pointed tips (118° or 135° angle) for clean cuts.

Professional Tips:

·       Apply cutting oil to reduce heat and friction.

·       Drill at low to medium speed for bit longevity.

·       Cobalt bits are ideal for hard metals like stainless steel.  Using cobalt drill bits also prevents the hole from rusting (if used on stainless steel and other corrosion-resistant metals).

·       Use a regular power drill. If using a hammer drill, remember to turn off the hammer.

·       Using a masonry or wood drill bit will make drilling difficult and result in rough cuts.

What Drill Bit for Wood?

Twist bits (made of HSS or carbon steel) or brad-point bits are best for wood. Twist bits have a sharp point and spiral body to avoid clogging. Brad points have a sharp centre for precise, splinter-free holes.

Professional Tips:

·       Clamp wood to prevent slippage on polished surfaces

·       3-12 mm bits are best for screws and dowels.

·       For larger holes, like pipes, use spade bits (15-25mm). These are flat bits with a pointed edge.

·       For softwoods (e.g. Narra), drill at medium to high speeds. For hardwoods (e.g. Yakal), use slower speeds. Be mindful of the speed, as it may cause clogging and overheating if you go too fast.

Other Special Types of Drill Bits

As its category implies, specialty bits have their own unique functions:

·       Forstner Bits: Used in cabinetry to make flat-bottomed or overlapping holes in wood (10-50 mm)

·       Hole Saws: Ideal for plumbing to create large holes in wood, metal, or drywall (25-100 mm)

·       Step Bits: Generally used in electric panels to drill multiple holes in thin metal and plastic

·       Tile Bits: Carbide tipped for use on ceramic or glass, commonly used for bathroom renovations

Final Tips

With the Philippines having a tropical climate, humidity is a big factor when it comes to the longevity of your drill bits. You should store them in a dry, organized case to prevent rust. Buying quality drill bits from trusted brands such Bosch, Makita, and Dormer can ensure your drill bits last longer. Always use the right drill bit to avoid damaging your project and your power tools.
