Where to Find Training for First-Time Welders

Welding is a valuable skill but comes with significant risks. The heat, high voltage, intense glare, and toxic fumes are hazardous. If you're interested in welding, it's crucial to seek professional, hands-on training. In the Philippines, institutions like TESDA (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority) and other trade schools offer welding courses.

Companies should ensure that all their welders are properly trained to prevent accidents and achieve high-quality welds.

 

 

Choosing Your Welding Type for Your Project

When choosing a welding type, it's important to consider the requirements of your project.

 

1.   Stick Welding (SMAW) — The most used type for general welding. Because it's more forgiving of dirty/rusty welding material and doesn't require shielding gas, it's a great choice for construction, repair, and maintenance work.

SMAW welding machines and welding rods are often the most affordable among the welding types, making this the perfect starting point for welders on a budget.

 

2.   TIG Welding —TIG welding is perfect for precise high-quality welds. It provides greater control, making it a good choice for tasks that require fine detail, such as in the automotive and manufacturing industries.

TIG welding machines and filler rods tend to be more expensive than SMAW welding machines.

 

3.  MIG Welding — MIG welding is fast and easy, making it great for beginners. It’s ideal for projects with thick welding materials that require clean welds, such as construction and automotive repair.

Choosing the Right Welding Machine and Consumables

After selecting the appropriate welding type, choose a machine model and the consumables that meet your project’s technical requirements.

·       Welding Machine Model — The thickness of the material being welded often determines the welding machine model. Welding thicker materials requires a more powerful model with a higher amperage.

·       Welding Consumable Designation and Size — Welding rods, filler rods, and welding wire have designations (number codes) that specify the materials they’re suitable for. Check the manufacturer’s website or ask your local hardware store for guidance on the right designation for your project.

 

Welding consumables also come in different sizes. Smaller diameters are best for thinner materials, while larger diameters are better for thicker ones. Refer to the manufacturer’s website to ensure you choose the right size for your project.

 

Last But Not Least, Remember To Wear Safety Equipment

Like we mentioned before, welding comes with serious safety hazards. Here’s a list of safety gear you need:

·       Welding Mask/Helmet

·       General Welding Gloves (or TIG gloves, which are preferred for welding types requiring greater flexibility)
